01 - Jane Austen's Bath

Jane Austen's Bath concentrates on Jane's five years living in the city (1801-1806) and her two contrasting Bath novels - Northanger Abbey and Persuasion - set in the city. Even today, Jane's footsteps are still evident and many of the places she mentions are easy to identify. Moira brings Jane's view of the city to life.

02 - Jane Austen and The Pleasure Garden

'Jane Austen never liked Bath'. In this walk, Moira seeks to redress the balance and brings to life certain aspects of the city Jane enjoyed very much indeed: her home at 4 Sydney Place, the marvels of Sydney Gardens - with its sham castle, labyrinth, grotto, canal; the delightfully situated Spring Gardens and the pretty riverside location of Harrison's Walks.

03 - 'There is never any end to Bath' - An Architectural Tour

Three men reinvented Bath in the eighteenth century: Ralph Allen, Richard Beau Nash and John Wood the Elder, though there were many other 'unsung heroes' who played a major role. We will concentrate on the architectural highlights, the stories of the 'key players' and, of course, the 'unsung heroes'.

04 - Fanny Burney in Bath

'A city of Palaces, a town of hills, & a hill of towns'

Jane Austen greatly admired Fanny Burney and Fanny Burney genuinely loved Bath - 'houses so elegant, streets so beautiful, prospects so enchanting' - and, unlike Jane, revelled in an incessant amount of company. This walk will focus on her homes, her lively aquaintance, her characters and her pleasures, taking in her memorial and supposed final resting place at St Swithin's, Walcot.

05 - Jane Austen goes House Hunting – Then and Now

Jane lived in four houses during her five years in Bath, and stayed in – as well as looked at – several more. These places will be viewed through her novels and letters; a very different picture from the present emerges.....
